Moldy fruit

status: uncompleted

In this piece I tried to show the beauty in decaying matter through mold and fruit. I kept the fruit bright and colorful despite the mold taking over it. In the top left square, I put some other things that embodied finding the beauty in rot: a dead rose in a bright blue vase, old antique books with titles centered around decaying beauty, and a just blown out candle with smoke still emitting from its wick. Despite the state of deteriation.

I was inspired by Kathleen Ryan and her sculptures of moldy fruit using precious gemstones. Her series "Bad Fruit" explores themes of decay, overconsumption, and beauty, using materials like glass, pearls, and crystals to represent mold on materials like Styrofoam.

The Master Artist I chose for this piece is Caravaggio. His pirece "Basket of fruit" was inspiring to me because as he painted the painting the fruit began to overrippen and began to decay with blemishes, curling leaves, and signs of rot. That can be seen in the painting with worm holes on the apples and wilting leaves.
